Open Question: How can I convince my parents to let me have a ferret?
I'm 17 and I've wanted a ferret for a couple of years now. I've done days of research now, ferret-proofed my room, have the money needed for everything, I even have two names picked out. One for a sable, and one for an albino. My parents are divorced, and at my mom's home I have a [very friendly] dog and a turtle. I spend 90% of my time at my dad's, where I don't have any pets. I've mentioned it a couple of times to both parents how badly I want a ferret, and how I am more than ready to take on the responsibility. My mom doesn't trust me because I got a guinea pig in the 4th grade, and it was one of those "lost interest quickly and made mom take care of it" pets. But as I grew older, I cleaned her cage and fed her. [she died last year of old age. :[ ] I even went to look at some today and had to be [literally] dragged away by my boyfriend. So please help me. How do I convince my parents to let me have a ferret?

Open Question: Ruining my sims game?
Okay so, i bought the sims 2 pets recently..and my graphics card isn't upgraded so the walls turned red. i talked to a pal about it and he said since my computer is 5 years old [they start to break after 6 or so apparently] that buying a graphics card would be a waste. so i've decided that i just want to uninstall the sims 2 pets. i didn't back up my saved game files. my question is, after i uninstall the pets, will i lose memory of the sims 2 game in general plus the ep's i have [university, nightlife, & ofb] or will it just delete saved games from those. i personally don't care about saved games, i don't plan to play any of the families again and i've just been too lazy to delete them anyways. my problem is that i don't want to have to re install the sims 2 and it's ep's. please help me out!

Open Question: I want a ferret! Convinving my mother?...?
I've been wanting a ferret for the past three years! I'm 14 i have a job, i have enough money already to receive the ferret and food (already have a cage). At the moment i possess a cat, a rabbit and a mouse ( i also have a dog but he doesn't live with me anymore). My mum owns 3 budgies (her pets). I take care of my animals, and i know i can afford to pay for their food and vet bills if needed (i've done every my research). My problem is my mum said no, arrive to me in a few years. What's the difference? Does she think every my pets are going to die by than or something? I don't receive it. She told me her concern is money, and when i told her i have the money and i also have a job she just said well i don't know. Any suggestions on how to convince her? Please don't answer saying their bad pets and a waste of money, i've done every my research and know everything about them.

Open Question: Our son is 5 days old when is it okay to expose him to our dog (9 mos old) not that I am fond of the idea?
My fiance is a animal lover and plays and is very attentive to our dog (more like his I don't care to have him really). I receive anxiety when ever the dog is close me, on our sofa, in any bedrooms or following us foot step for foot step. My fiance is very much okay with the dog going anywhere in the home and even hand feeding him. The dog has licked our infants feet, rubbed his nose on the babies head, and around his arm and im grossed out! Yesterday he rolled in dirt at the park and then my fiance pet him and got on the floor in the apartment to play with him before washing his hands to handle our baby, my issue was the dog was every over his clothes! I was upset about that because he knew I disapproved of that and it angered me. Well................what should I do I want the dog to be a floor pet that is somewhat self reliant in playing with HIS chew toys in his possess space and that time be set aside and designated for the dog so HE'S NOT ALWAYS RIGHT THERE AT OUR SIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have read a lot of websites and they every say pay attention to the pet, reassure the pet, blah blah blah. In my opinion a dog is an animal and although they shouldn't be mistreated they have been humanized too much and that the principal focus should be on the baby and the dog should be last. After every the dog has been around for a long while now and I feel he doesn't need so much attention. How are dogs companions they serve no purpose in my opinion they consume food, they need attention, chew on everything, they are more of a toy or accessory in my opinion for a man! Like a muscle car. I don't have the understanding of a dog being family.

Open Question: pet help (need fast answer)?
theres a cat outside my home (not mine) but it seems to be in very bad condition. it is 7:30am and i wanna call somethin to pick him up and take care of him (i need a place that is open at 7:30am and picks animals up to help/keep them) i was outside petting it, it seems to be sufferin from malnutrition but wont eat any of the food i try to feed it, its "meow" is raspy and muffled, and it seems to be having a little trouble breathing (tried wipin the stuff from its nose, doesnt seem to help) it wont arrive inside at every. it avoids the door. i tried opening the window to let it in and it still wont (i dont wanna force it inside if it doesnt wanna be). a 1-800 number would be awesome for those who cease by, i called the local police and got a really good officer. unfortunately what they would do is end up putting it in the pound without really taking care of it and just putting it down when it seemed to be suffering. he explained the down-low on what would happen if he called to take it in and we both agreed that he should not call and let it have it chance at life (if it gets better, and we every wish it does, then it will be fine and still alive rather than put down at first sign of becoming too much to deal with for the pound). it walked off, so it is no longer within my power to help it, but it seems to have a icy from the storm we had last night (breathing hinderance seems to be a stuffy nose). maybe it has a sore throat causing the raspy meow? (would not know though, honestly). anyways, it seems this would be best since no place around here does pickups (and those that do are full for the next few months). thanks for your help everyone

Resolved Question: No help for stray cats and kittens in this county/state!!?
Where are the cat lovers of TN or the USA? I call the Humane Society and they say they have no foster homes for cats and kittens. I call Animal Control and they won't bring traps to receive the cats to take them with them to find them homes. We live in a trailer park and we have a little kitten we rescued off the road but we don't want every the other cats and kittens outside. They keep coming to our trailer to eat and most people here keep feeding them but they keep having kittens. They every need homes so they can receive neutered or spayed so they can be a nice pet to someone. I was told it was illegal for animals to run lose out there yet animal control don't do a thing. The owner of the trailer park is supposed to set the traps for the cats and we know he dont care. Where can one go to help these needy helpless cats? Here in this country the cat is the number one pet before the dog yet cats receive abandoned as much as dogs. So to every the cat lovers: Please send me answers to this problem!!

Open Question: Pac man frog cannibal?
My Albino "Pac-Man" frog, Fred, would not eat or move for a long time. He shunned crickets, fish, and pinkies. One night, as a joke, my husband put a tiny toad in the tank with him that he got at the store. As soon as Fred realized it was there, he actually got up, stalked it, and finally ate it! Now that seems to be the ONLY thing he will eat (we tried other things). Is this normal? And just so everyone knows, I DO take VERY good care of his cage. I "rescued" him from a pet store that left him in a severly unsanitary cage, and with the "red fungus." That was two years ago, and although his growth seems to have stunted, his color and demeanor is otherwise healthy. PLEASE, no rude and inconsiderate comments! Thanks everyone!

Open Question: What do you think about 4-H?
I'm not even entirely sure what 4-H is - I don't think it exists around here. However, I've been to some fairs in rural parts of Connecticut and there are usually some 4-H kids there. Last time I went, there was some kid with a guinea pig that he kept in a grubby Rubbermaid bin. And the kid looked PROUD! YA seems to attract a lot of 4-H kids asking questions, and it appears that lots of them don't know how to properly care for their animals. It also seems that they're encouraging breeding of animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. Now, I understand that it seems to be an agricultural program primarily, but kids shouldn't be encouraged to breed pets! I'd never recommend breeding rabbits or guinea pigs to most adults, and certainly not an 11 year old who keeps them in plastic bins! I guess the premise is to "tutor kids responsibility" but it doesn't seem to be working. Why are parents discouraged from getting pets for that purpose, but 4-H seems to be thriving? Also, the thing that bothers me the most is how it seems "project"-oriented. It's like giving out a merit badge for breeding guinea pigs! Kids breed a few litters, check it off on their list, receive rid of the guinea pigs and receive a goat. How can any child learn in an environment like that? The breeding project does exist - Google 4-H "rabbit breeding project" and you receive links to lots of 4-H branches and their guidelines for the project. "Rabbit Breeding Project: In this project, you possess one or more does and an appropriate number of bucks. One or more litters are raised. Offspring are sold for breed stock and show animals. Members should also market the young. Members are encouraged to use pure-bred commercial breeds for this project, although crossbred rabbits are acceptable. Members must home, feed, and care for animals properly." Breeding rabbits isn't about producing more, it's about producing QUALITY animals - you can't do that with one litter, and you certainly can't do it with mixed breeds. Apparently nobody read to the end of my question. I am not against breeding animals - I am against taking breeding animals lightly! kids should not be breeding animals as "projects." LEARN TO READ, FOLKS!

Open Question: Cat hates Wellness CORE and canned food .. what to do?
I have a 9 year old cat and a 3 year old cat. In the last couple of months I started doing alot of research on cat food. I was feeding my cats Iams Healthy Naturals. (which they like) . Now I know the importance of feeding quality 'holitistic' dry food. My 9 year old will eat tiny amounts of canned food but my three year old REFUSES completely! I bought Wellness CORE last week and both my cats hate it! ( I should have saved my receipt) I swear my 3yr old cat didn't eat for the past week. I finally poured her a bowl of just healthy naturals and she gobbled it up. needy girl, I want her to be glad and healthy. I don't care about the cost of the food. I hate two great pet food stores close me. Question. Is Healthy Naturals by Iams really really bad or just bad? If they didn't like CORE, do you think they probably won't like Innova Evo either? Is it mean to not put any dry food down for a few days to try to receive my 3yr old female cat to eat canned food? any body?

Resolved Question: Suggestions...what have you done?
Today I had to let my GSD go live with new owners and my heart is truly breaking. I am returning to work on Monday as well as continuing my psych degree once my summer break is over. This will leave me away from home for long hours throughout the week. Day care is not an option because unfortunatly, he was banned from the only one in my area because he jumps on people he doesn't know, and only listens to my husband and I. My husband was not an option because he drives OTR. I found a man and lady who came highly recommended. He and his fiance both are upstanding citizens. He is a police officer and she is a paramedic. Bear took to them as if it was my husband and I, and I felt comfortable in them becoming the new owners. While I have visitation rights, I still feel as though I let him down. That I failed my baby as a pet owner. The guilt of watching him leave with them has had me pretty upset every night. How have you dealt with this type of situation? Am I overreacting Rayven, dogs are not allowed in his truck per company rules. We looked into that option, and even thought about going against it until a month ago when it seems at least once a week he is brought into their main hub for classes. Not to mention at 11 months Bear is almost 80 lbs and not even full grown yet (still needs to finish filling out) so we worried his exercise would be limited. I guess the guilt came in because we also have 2 boxers. Well, my 2 boxers respond to my whole family. They were not partial to just my husband or I. As for the emotional part, I know I had his fiance in tears because me and my daughters were bawling. I just find myself wondering could we have done something different or did he have the true GSD traits and just latch on to the 2 of us. Yes, the owners were told that if ever they cannot care for him in the future, he is to be returned to me. And they were understanding of those terms and agreed it would only be the way to go. Thank you every for answering. Maybe my emotions are just getting the best of me right now, and I guess it is normal. And I do believe that I did the right thing. He will be glad, and it's not like I will never look him again. Besides, my bear boy may go on to make me proud and keep a life one day as a police dog :)

Open Question: What's the best pet for a first time pet owner?
Hi everyone, Recently, I've been hoping to receive a pet. I would adore any pet that's affectionate and good around people; although if need be I can put its cage in my room so it's not around people. I'm gone at school during day, and I do several sports afterwards, so it also has to do well alone during the day. I could always receive another pet to accompany it, but my parents are very reluctant just to receive me a pet, let alone two. I'm still trying to convince them, so I think to start a tiny pet would be best. Probably a rodent. My mom's scared of both mice and rats, so they're out. I'm thinking a hamster might be the way to go, but I'm not really sure about the whole nocturnal thing. Is a hamster the way to go? Keeping in mind my parent's don't want to take care of it in five years when I'm gone, and I want an affection pet, what pet do you reccomend? I'm open to any suggestions. If you do suggest a hamster, which breed/gender should I receive? Thanks in advance!

Open Question: What type of small pet loves to be around people...?
I want to receive a dog so bad, but I can't until I move after Christmas because the apartment I'm in now only allows tiny, quite, caged pets. I already have two rabbits but they are bonded to each other and usually like to spend their time playing together and not playing with me. I want something tiny that's not noisy, but that will actually like spending time with me. It doesn't matter the level of care it needs, I adore spending time taking care of my pets so if it needs a lot of care thats fine. Can someone please make some pet suggestions for me?

Open Question: Dog taken by the SPCA?
My in-laws have a dog that is 14 years old. Honestly, they didn't take good care of her like they should have. Her nails don't receive trimmed, she doesn't receive taken to the vet & has a lump on her belly. Yesterday she got out & was taken to the SPCA before they found her. The lady at the SPCA looked at her long nails & the lump & screamed animal cruelty. My in-laws tried to receive the dog back, but the lady at the SPCA said that it they didn't sign the dog over to them then they would take them to court, press charges & take away their other dog. To avoid court my mom-in-law signed the dog over. The way I look this, this was not intentional animal cruelty, it was laziness that led to neglect. The SPCA usually provides counseling to people that don't know how to properly care for a pet. Shouldn't they provide this concealing to my in-laws, receive the dog medical care & turn it back over to them? If this doesn't happen would I be able to go adopt the dog even though I'm related to them? If I adopted the dog she would not be going back to my in-laws. I just don't want to look the needy old dog receive put to snooze, which is what I am afraid will happen since she is so old. I mean, who wants to adopt a 14 year old dog? Most of you people are not being helpful or giving an answer to my question. I want to try to receive the dog back. I don't need a lecture about what is and is not animal abuse. I have a cat that is 18 years old and I take excellent care of her. Do you really think I could receive a cat to live that long if I did not know how to care for an animal? I just don't want to look this dog receive put to snooze or spend her last days locked in a cage. So please cease explaining to me what neglect is.

Open Question: How to care for my surprise fish!?
So, I went to a local pet-store today to receive a pal for my beta, and I bought what was labeled as a "trilineatus corydora." I wasn't too sure that was what it was, but the store owner assured me it was the right fish. I had never been here before, I have a saltwater dealer, but my pal raved about him and I've tentatively branched into freshwater- so why not add another dealer to my A-list? It looked nice enough- no dead fish floating around, clean establishment, clean tanks, etc... However, after I acclimated my new 'corydora' I did a little digging, and no I didn't buy a corydora- I bought a fish I have never even heard of before! How do I take care of a Striped Raphael catfish? Which looks NOTHING like the fish I wanted! It's in a 10 gallon tank right now, with a nice little filter, airstones, some plastic plants, and a rock/cave thing. I'd just return the thing, but I won't have time for about four days and my beta tolerates him, so maybe I'll keep it.

Open Question: What is a good pet for my kids? Modified?
Earlier today I asked what would be a good pet for my kids. I had a rabbit and it bit my 6 year old as an baby(unprovoked). Not going down that road again. The dog, cat and any rodent we have tried. Dogs didn't work because of accidents in the home, I don't want a cat because I don't want my 3 year old in a litter box. Rodents just weren't right for us. Also I'm not dumb and the pet would be for my kids but of course I would have the responsibilty of caring for it. So now that i have made my self a little more clear, can anyone think of a good pet for my 6 and 3 year old.

Open Question: If you have a love for animals and a tender heart when it comes to seeing one hurt....?
doesn't that mean that you're a good person or if you're a child, you'll grow up to be a good person? My son is 8 and has a adore like mine when it comes to animals. He hates watching movies where animals receive hurt, just like when I was little. I liked Old Yeller, but I hated the end. He's one of those people who says "Awwwwww, i want one" whenever he sees an animal. We went out on the boat scalloping the other day and found a blowfish and the first thing outta his mouth was "awwwww". Then when we got home, he found a dead lizard in the fan outside and picked it up and started petting it and even cried!! Then he went and buried it while his pal made fun of him. I got onto his pal for making fun of him and told him that said a lot about a person when they cared for animals and would he rather have seen him stomp on it's head and giggle like a heartless brat? What do you think?

Open Question: Do I need a permit to offer Childcare at a wedding?
Do you need a special allow of any sort to offer childcare for your wedding? I do not want kids at the reception or ceremony so we have decided to have a "fun day" with a petting zoo, clowns and games for the kids the day before the wedding. Because of this, many out of town guests have decided to bring their kids. I have several distant cousins/friends who have offered to provide child care during the reception and Ceremony at my Grandmothers big home on the outskirts of town. We have it organized that there will be no more than 3-5 kids per adult. At the moment there are going to be 15-20 kids that will be staying at the home that night. We have worked out sleeping arrangments so it will be fine, and every the adults who offered to provide child care have every signed up for a first aid course (that will be held before the wedding is to take place). Is there any sort of allow I need to receive to do this? I live in Ontario, Canada if that makes a difference.

Open Question: How to deal with an aggressive cat?
My roommate's female cat is about 2 years old and not spayed and she is so aggressive with the other cats in the home and with us and any guests we have over as well. She bites and will draw blood even if you're not doing anything so we don't touch, or pet her cat at every. The problem is her cat is so aggressive the other 2 cats, both female and both spayed. They hide from her and run away. She will hunt them down and attack them to the point where a cat battle breaks out and I have to yell and stomp my feet to receive it to cease and spray them with the spray bottle or toss a pillow or blanket on them. The spayed females are fine together, they wrestle and play and receive along, but my roommate's cat is out of control and so violent with everyone and I don't know what to do anymore. I often have to isolate her in a room when it gets bad and my roommate doesn't seem to care and is rarely home. She also refuses to receive her spayed and I don't even know if she's had her shots. What should I do?

Open Question: Need some advice from someone with pet rabbits or who knows about them?
I am serious about getting a pet rabbit. I would like to lift it from a baby, and I have some questions. 1.) Where can I find a med. sized condo (the 2-story nice) at a reasonable price? This is for inside and I want the rabbit to have plenty of room, but it can't be TOO huge. 2.) What breed of rabbit generally makes a gentle pet and tends to have an easier temperament? Are mini rexes good pets? (we want a mini breed, so if you know if any MINI breeds that are good, please let us know!) 3. Where is a good place to find a particular breed of rabbit once we've decided on breed? 4. Should we receive a companion rabbit (another rabbit)? 5. Will the rabbit need to be spayed/neutered? (for temperament reasons) 6. What gender tends to make better pets, if any? 7. What is the best thing to feed my rabbit? 8. Anything else I should know? Thank you in advance. I have spent a lot of time considering getting a rabbit/researching some things about their care, but I still have questions. I am looking for the two-story rabbit condo-style cage because I have read that rabbits adore them. But if you know of another style of cage that is good, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Wow, thanks for every the great info. How interesting about the salt lick! I know we used to receive them for our goats, but I didn't know that rabbits craving salt could develop a biting problem. Good idea to check ebay for rabbit "homes". Lots of other great answers as well. Thanks a lot to every who have given serious, helpful answers. Now, here's a question: is there a rabbit "season"? I can't seem to find them anywhere. At least locally.

Open Question: I want a rabbit?
I really want one for my birthday. How can I convince my parents? They always tug the "You already have a pet" thing on me. Also, what are the necessities for rabbit care taking? How much do you think it will cost? I don't want to have to worry about it getting sick or something. So what do I do to make sure it stays healthy? I have a cat. It likes to kill things. >.<; I know they are alot of work but I still don't understand how? Aren't they just like taking acre of any other rodent?

Open Question: What breed would you recommend?
We are empty nesters and truly adore animals. I would like a tiny dog that doesn't bark a lot, preferably doesn't shed, is intelligent, easy to train and loves much. In turn the dog will have an outstanding home with lots of adore, attention, care, and nurturing. A lot of grooming is preferable since we tend to go right to the Yorkies, Bishons, Shih Tzu, Maltese, etc. I don't know where to start to decide which breed would be best for us. We'd like to have one that enjoys people, likes to go places with us, loves to be loved. We would give a moderate amount of exercise and have a nice big fenced in yard. He/She would be pampered and given the best but would also have guidelines and boundaries as well. Just as any child needs guidelines I believe a pet does as well. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Resolved Question: What is the best kind of lizard for a pet for a beginner?
I was thinking either some nice of gecko or anole, because they look chilly and are tiny. I want a lizard that is easy to care for, and doesn't take up too much space. I probably won't be handling it a lot, but maybe a little. Feeding live crickets, might be difficult, but I could do prekilled bugs and mice. I don't want it to be too expensive, but price isn't a huge issue.

Open Question: Dealing with the loss of a pet.?
This really isnt a question, but more of an expression. I had a dog. This dog was my little guy. He was more than a pet, he was my pal. He was so full of life, and although he was almost 9 yrs old, he got around like a youngster. Recently he became sick. He started to breath in a continuous panting format. He was taken to the vet, and diagnosed with 5 different things, every of which did not explain the breathing issues. I took him to a second vet. This vet had xrays taken. It appeared to be some type of pneumonia. I tried an antibiotic, but his willingness to eat would not resurface. A few days of force feeding was every I could take. To look him in this state was just terrible for me. I was someone who would always protect him from anything life threw at him. I was helpless this time. I took him back to the vet and asked him to keep him until they could properly treat him. They checked his heart, and that turned out fine. My dog died two days later in the vets care.

Open Question: Good Pets For a 5 year old?
My son really wants a box turtle for his birthday. I have read that they are not very good pets for kids and require lots of specific care. Does anyone have an idea of a pet that might be good for a child this age? He does not want fish or a cat or dog. Any suggestions & info would be appreciated! He is a very gentle child, and I obviously will be the primary care-taker of the pet. I just want a good one he can "help" care for.
